“Steel Pulse deliver a rousing take on the world today, exploring issues from trafficking to climate change with sincerity and positivity.” (The Guardian)

Formed in 1975 in Birmingham, Steel Pulse are UK reggae legends. The group’s 1978 debut, Handsworth Revolution, is a reggae cult classic. Fast forward to the new millennium, and these musical heroes were the first non-Jamaican act to win the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. How impressive is that?! This record was called Mass Manipulation and dropped in 2019 through Rootfire Cooperative / Wiseman Doctrine. According to the band, it “reflects four decades of bettering mankind through music.” Mass Manipulation’s debut single “Stop You Coming And Come” stars ancient sounds paired with catchy lyrics, transporting listeners to a time where secrets of an African clan are revealed. The roots rhythms of traditional Steel Pulse grooves like Ku Klux Klan have paved the way for slightly poppier, brassier sounds and even the occasional rap. This 17 tracklist calls for global unity and cements a rousing comeback. “Steel Pulse deliver a rousing take on the world today, exploring issues from trafficking to climate change with sincerity and positivity,” says the Guardian. The group is made up of David Hinds (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Selwyn Brown (keyboards, backing vocals), Sidney Mills (keyboards, backing vocals), Wayne Clarke (drums), Amlak Tafari (bass), David Ellecirri Jr. (lead guitar), Stephen Bradley (trumpet), Zem Audu (saxophone), and Baruch Hinds (rap and backing vocals). As reggae pioneers, this first class lineup remains an absolute powerhouse on stages around the world.
